Spearmint Mentha spicata
Spearmint originates from Northern Africa and the Mediterranean and was first introduced to Britain by the Romans. Mints are very easily identified by their fresh and cleansing scent which is common across this plant family and they often grow in damp places. There are many different varieties of this plant because of its ability to hybridize readily.
Mints are used in almost every industry including the health, beauty, culinary and horticultural industries and is now one of the most widely recognised herbs.
In mythology, Minthe was a river nymph who was punished and turned into a lowly plant that people would walk upon. Eventually the punishment was lifted and the plant was given a sweet smell which would be released when walked on, bringing people joy!
